Everyday Life

People say that the action never stops in Budapest, as the city offers a variety of entertainment. Cafes, pubs, and dance clubs make the evenings colorful in the city. Young people, mainly students, are to be found in cafes at all times of day. People also work from cafes as most offer free wireless internet.  Some cafes even have a decorative theme to make them more attractive to customers. Summertime boasts outdoor bars and cafes where you can mingle or do your work while lounging in the sunshine.

If you would like to experience a city buzzing with culture, and staying lively through the night with hip bar and club scenes, then your choice should be Budapest. The city offers a myriad of activities that will suit anyone’s needs, ensuring you will never become bored. Many English language publications exist which outline the nightlife, cultural events, and outdoor activities to be enjoyed. But don’t hesitate to ask your school mates for their advice on a night out in Budapest.

If you are having a hard time learning Hungarian, but still want to know what's happening in the city, read The Budapest  Sun for news, or Funzine for programs and gastro.

Tipping for Services

Hungary is a very tip conscious society and it is routine to tip waiters, hairdressers, and taxi drivers, basically anyone who provides a service for you. Even doctors and dentists accept ‘gratitude money’, and it is common for petrol station attendants and thermal spa attendants to receive a tip.

The standard tipping rate is 10 percent. In a restaurant setting this amount might already be included in your bill so check before you tip. If you are unsure do not hesitate to ask your server.

The way you tip in Hungary is different from most other countries. It is important that you never leave money on your table, this is considered offensive. Instead you should add your tip to the bill total when you pay. For example, if the bill is 2,700 Ft, and you are paying with a 5,000 Ft note, tell your server you would like to pay 3,000 Ft or that you would like to receive 2,000 Ft back in change.

If you are unsatisfied with your experience it is acceptable to leave very little or no tip at all, as this will convey your displeasure; just as it is acceptable to tip slightly higher than the average for outstanding service.
